Our holiday at RIU Cabo Verde left us with very mixed feelings about the hotel. Staff were excellent - well trained, friendly, helpful. 5* Cleanliness was amazing. They were forever sweeping the floors and cleaning the public toilets, so they were almost always spotless. The rooms were also really well cleaned. All the staff deserve to be congratulated. 5* Rooms were large, comfortable, good Aircon, Really nice walk in shower. Good lighting and plenty of it with enough controls to choose your mood. The room decor wasn’t very exciting, but it worked so well. Two large pools - one heated with a swim up bar and very easy access via a slope with handrail if you had any mobility issues. Really nice. Lots of loungers and plenty of shade around the pool, although the shades could do with some maintenance, as some were really difficult to pull. 5* Smoking. Some web sites say this is a no-smoking hotel, which is true of rooms and indoor areas, but so many people smoked around the pool and the wind carried the smoke onto other guests. No smoke free areas anywhere. Horrible! (no stars). Entertainment team - great. Full of enthusiasm and fun. Always trying to have something going and the aqua-robics were great fun with the most energetic coach. Fun just to watch. The shows in the evening were varied and excellent quality. Our only complaint is the noise level at the Friday party. Thump, thump, thump of base so heavy it was truly horrible except for the 18-30s, which were not the majority of guests, so why not tone it down a bit to suit more people. Beach - good with bar and plenty of shade. Bars had rather a limited range of drinks and did not, for example, have a daily special. It is mainly because of the food that we were disappointed. Salad and fruit were excellent. We think they really cooked food well to make sure it was safe, but it meant that meat was often overcooked and very tough. I remember ribs, which if slow cooked should melt off the bone and neither of us could eat them because they were so tough. The cakes were horrible - mostly mock cream/sponge things. They looked fantastic, but very bland taste. Danish pastries and chocolate croissant were dry and horribly boring. There was a huge range of food each night, but it did not change. I think they had an identical chicken curry 5 nights running! Great - have a curry each night, but vary it with Thai, Malay, Japanese, Indian - each of which have dozens of recipes to choose. Similarly the speciality restaurant menus never changed. OK for one week, but surely the hotel could alternate and have a different menu every second week. Overall food and drink only 3*. Finally we have to mention the wind which is extremely strong and cold. If you can sit in the sub-tropical sun for 7 hours every day that will keep you warm, but if you move into the shade it is really cold. Even though the temperature was around 26C, we had to put on jumpers, or wrap a towel around is if w
